Learning a foreign language can sometimes get confusing as you are trying to
improve your skills alongside your courses. This is usually a common question
from learners: “how can we practice at home?”
In this article we want to explore some of the very useful techniques for you to
do at home to practice a new language and making the most of your language
courses.
Shadowing
This is very well-known, recommended technique for your pronunciation but
also, expanding your vocabularies and you might not believe it but has its
impact on your grammatical knowledge as well. So basically, you are supposed
to play and audio, pause after each phrase and try to repeat it exactly as you
have heard it. Now why is it useful for expanding vocabulary and practicing
grammar as well? Because by repeating a sentence (a correct native piece of
audio) you are giving your brain the correct data and asking it to hold on to it
for you. So, this practice can be a great way to get acquainted with the way of
thinking in the target language and sound native.
Record Your Sound in the New Language
So basically, the purpose of this practice is to record yourself speaking or even
reading a book to listen to it again and mostly for practicing listening with it.
Personally, I believe there is more to it; most beginner learners struggle at the
beginning stages to speak or even make a phrase even though they have
enough knowledge, and that’s because by learning a new language you are
introducing a new sound to your brain so it is going to take some time for your
brain to get familiar with the new language and accept it. By listening to your
own voice in the target language, you are easing your brain into accepting the
new language.
Reading comprehension (but really, just comprehension)
So, the first approach of new learners is to spot new vocabularies and be
concerned with what they don’t know or can’t understand in a reading. But
really, is that what reading “COMPREHENSION” is about? So, You don’t need to
know the meaning of every word in an article to understand what it is about or
answer some questions about it. Therefore when you try understanding a reading, think
about the subject, try to summarize what you’ve understood from the text or
discuss it with someone else maybe, this way you are forcing your brain to struggle (and
spend some time) with the new language. The result will be impressive.
Listen to the new language even when you are not listening
Learners usually think they have to make time for practicing listening in a new
language, while that being correct you can also have some spontaneous
listening while you are cooking or driving, and you don’t have neither the time
nor the focus to practice listening. Still, just the sound of the new language in
background will do its work and will help your ears and brain to welcome the
new language with open arms. test your English level for free
